Weight management

Eating a handful of macadamias every day can play a role in helping maintain a healthy body weight.

There is a convincing body of evidence that shows the importance of including nuts within a healthy diet, without negative effects on body weight73.

Research shows that eating one to two servings of macadamias a day, even for people above a healthy weight, does not lead to weight gain74. In the study, adding about 35-60g of macadamias daily did not change waist circumference, body weight, or body fat percentage.

The good news about nuts and our weight

While many people used to think the high fat content of nuts would lead to weight gain, we now know nuts are instead powerful allies for healthy weight management73,75,76,77,78,79. In fact, eating macadamia nuts along with other nuts every day can be positive for maintaining a healthy body weight when compared to forgoing nuts.

The largest scientific review on nuts and body weight, which analysed more than 90 studies, found solid evidence that nuts help support (rather than hinder) healthy weight73. It showed that whether nuts, like macadamias, replace other snacks or are simply added to the daily diet, overall body weight remains unchanged.

The well-regarded PREDIMED Trial, which went across five years and included more than 7,400 people, found eating nuts as part of a balanced diet resulted in a reduction in participants’ waist circumferences80. Now that’s good news!

A delicious and healthy snack

Of course, nuts should be eaten as part of a balanced diet and this is so easy to do with Australian macadamias. This is because macadamias satisfy hunger and make us feel fuller for longer, thanks, in part, to their natural fibre, protein and healthy unsaturated fats. Just one healthy handful can stop us from reaching for less beneficial foods. Macadamias are an all-natural wholefood that are also decadently delicious, so they make the perfect replacement for highly processed snack foods which can easily lead to weight gain.
