Water

Water-smart by nature

Australia’s climate can be challenging, but macadamias are right at home in it. They have evolved over millions of years in these conditions, making them naturally well suited to Australia’s variable rainfall and dry environments. You could say they have a true home ground advantage.

Research into Australian macadamia orchards shows that these trees use water more efficiently than previously thought.¹ This is thanks to a clever natural system within the tree that helps regulate water use. During dry periods, the trees can reduce water loss by adjusting how much moisture they release, helping them stay resilient, even in times of drought.

Because of this natural efficiency, macadamias are considered a relatively low water-use crop compared with many others. It means growers can work with the tree’s natural strengths, rather than relying heavily on external inputs.

Making every drop count

Across the industry, growers are building on this natural advantage with thoughtful water management practices. Advanced irrigation systems and improved scheduling help ensure water is used carefully and only where it is needed. Ongoing research continues to refine these approaches, helping growers optimise every drop.

At the same time, many growers focus on protecting the surrounding environment. By planting and maintaining vegetation in and around orchards, particularly along waterways, they help improve water quality, reduce runoff and support healthier ecosystems.

In regions near the Great Barrier Reef, macadamia growers are also leading the way in Reef Certified farming. This reflects a strong commitment to caring for both land and water, helping protect some of Australia’s most important natural environments.
