That\u2019s equal to nearly 300 kilograms of food waste per person and enough to fill the Melbourne Cricket Ground 10 times over<sup>1<\/sup>!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Food waste happens at every stage of producing and consuming food \u2013 and the most waste happens in homes, costing households about $50 a week or $2500 a year<sup>1<\/sup>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But food waste affects more than just our household budgets: it contributes to higher food costs overall, and has environmental impacts. When wasted food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Plus, a lot of resources are wasted by producing, transporting and distributing food that\u2019s meant for our plates but ends up in the bin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No one <em>intends<\/em> to waste food, but it\u2019s definitely time to flip this script.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.australian-macadamias.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/AusMacadamias_YemeniBananaBread_Process7-edited-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"How to fight food waste (in the most delicious ways)\" class=\"wp-image-14878\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">How to fight food waste (in the most delicious ways)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The biggest culprits&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The top five most wasted foods in Australian households are vegetables, bread, fruit, bagged salads, and leftovers<sup>2<\/sup>. About 20% of the food we buy ends up in the bin \u2013 which is equal to one in five bags of groceries we buy<sup>3<\/sup>.<sup> <\/sup>With food costs increasing, it makes more sense than ever to get smarter about the way we shop, store and cook our food.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just imagine if you could avoid a lot of that waste: you\u2019d shrink your grocery bills, have fun creating tasty new meals from the odds and ends left in your fridge at the end of the week, all while doing your bit for the planet. That\u2019s a win:win:win \u2013 and we\u2019ve got lots of tips to make it easier \u2013 and rather delicious too!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to become part of the solution&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>It all begins with a plan&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re usually more of a \u2018I wonder what\u2019s for dinner tonight?\u2019 person, taking stock of what you already have and then planning your meals for the week helps you to stick to buying only what you need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check what\u2019s already in your pantry and fridge, making sure you look right to the back and in your crisper drawers, where food is often left to languish.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&nbsp;Move the ingredients that need to be used first to the front of your fridge and pantry, then take some \u2018shelfies\u2019 as a reminder.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plan what you\u2019ll eat for the week based on what you still have in the fridge and pantry, what\u2019s in season, what you enjoy eating, and your household schedule.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Write your shopping list.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Only buy what\u2019s on your list \u2013 and use any wilting produce and foods close to their use-by date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Then add some macadamia magic&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>When you<strong> <\/strong>have a stash of macadamias in your fridge or freezer, you\u2019ll have an extra bit of magic to weave through or on top of your fridge forage meals.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macadamias instantly raw)?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australian-macadamias.org\/zh\/recipe\/sweet-potato-feta-pancetta-and-macadamia-fritatta\/\">this frittata<\/a> with a crunchy macadamia topping. Substitute any veggies that you need to use up for the sweet potato, and leave out the pancetta to keep it meat-free if you prefer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australian-macadamias.org\/zh\/the-secret-to-the-best-savoury-macadamia-crumb\/\">macadamia crumb<\/a> and turn any waning veggies into your meal\u2019s centrepiece: mushrooms, cabbage, cauliflower, pumpkin, sweet potato or broccoli can all take on star status treated this way.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Simmer all those veggies at the back of your crisper drawer into a big pot of minestrone and swirl a spoonful of Sicilian macadamia and tomato pesto on top.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you have leftover cooked rice (or any grain for that matter), try our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.australian-macadamias.org\/zh\/recipe\/quick-macadamia-fried-rice\/\">quick macadamia fried rice<\/a> adding any finely chopped extra veg you need to use up.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.australian-macadamias.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/1711-Quick-macadamia-fried-rice-1-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-14876\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Limp lettuce?<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Don\u2019t toss that sad looking bagged salad mix!
