Amazing antioxidants

How can something as delicious as a creamy macadamia nut help protect your body against cell damage, disease and cognitive decline?

The secret lies in their high antioxidant content. Macadamias boast some of the highest levels of flavonoids, a polyphenol antioxidant, of all tree nuts36. Flavonoids, and all the other antioxidants in nuts, including macadamias, act as your own internal army working to maintain your wellbeing.

Full of ‘fight-o-chemicals’

Macadamia nuts are packed with phytochemicals; compounds found in plants that show anti-inflammatory and antioxidant behaviour3,16,36,37,38. Oxidative stress is caused by harmful free radicals that form in the body due to the numerous chemical reactions occurring39. This cell damage contributes to inflammation, premature ageing and chronic diseases like heart disease, type 2 diabetes and dementia40. Studies show that eating naturally antioxidant-rich nuts, such as macadamias, as part of a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains, improves markers of oxidative stress therefore reducing the risk of chronic disease and premature ageing41,42. Macadamias also contain antioxidant minerals, such as manganese, magnesium and copper, which play an important role keeping us and our immune systems healthy. They are a source of tocotrienols too, a form of vitamin E with antioxidant properties, that may help lower cholesterol and protect against certain cancers and brain diseases43.

Protecting against ageing

Recent research shows that regularly eating nuts like macadamias as part of a healthy diet may help improve cognitive function and reduce decline44,45,46. These effects could be related to the vitamin E in the nuts which may shield cell membranes from damage, helping slow mental decline47.
